Community Supported Bakery Shares

What the heck is a CSB Share?!

CSB stands for "Community-Supported Bakery". Built on the model of a CSA (community supported agriculture) plan, our CSB retains the localized attention to food availability while strengthening direct customer to producer relationships. Generally, the CSA model requests early payment for promised goods as a way of balancing small business fluctuations; allowing the farmer, or the baker in this case, to minimize big shifts so that they can consistently offer healthy and reliable goods to their communities. This translates well to baked goods as we can help support sustainable (and local) agriculture and honor adaptive traditional practices.

So how does this work then?

Simple. Ish...

Patrons sign up for bakery share. A traditional CSA share is seasonal and based on the growing seasons and cycles of the farm. Our bakery is not held to these seasonal shifts and so our shares are a simple 6 month cycle starting on Jan. 1 and July 1. Shares come in two sizes:

Half Share: A 6 month share of $50.00 includes the commitment to purchasing (in addition to the share fee)  a minimum of $5 of goods. Plus a commitment gift for signing on.

Full Share: A 6 month share of $50 includes the commitment to purchasing (in addition to the share fee) a minimum of $10 of goods. Plus a bigger commitment gift!

Our “pay-as-you-go” model gives patrons the flexibility to customize their share each week via our online store or receive a Baker’s Choice share as the default. Payment for custom orders is made directly through the Shop on the website. Baker's Choice shares will be invoiced at the end of each calendar month in which they occur.

This model also requires a much lower payment upfront than a traditional CSA, which lowers the barrier for participation, making food more accessible throughout our communities. At the same time, the $50 member fee helps support our efforts to live and work intentionally with and within  local Maine economies and communities.

Baked Goods are delivered every week to our member's designated drop location. We are currently supporting drop off/pick up locations in the Portland and Augusta areas. We are working to set up more drop locations throughout both these areas.

It is our goal to aggregate deliveries in as few locations as possible but we are also willing to work with you to make sure you can get your order in a timely fashion with as little inconvenience as possible.

Why CSB?

As a Stone Broke Bread CSB patron you are providing a reliable market for our products and in exchange we deliver you really good bread. The benefits of this relationship add up quickly for your health, the health of our business, the local economy, and the environment, as we are able to offer our bread at a competitive price thanks to customer direct sales with fewer road miles, less handling, and less overall waste.

That sounds great! How do I sign up for a share?

New customers can contact us directly via the contact page on this site to determine share availability and to sign up. Once you are a member you can renew your shares directly through the website.
